Therapy for Aphasia & Brain Injury

By age 4 a child is expected to be understandable to others 90% of the time.  There are different reasons why some children have trouble with speaking clearly.  Difficulties with speaking clearly and not being understood can leave a child feeling frustrated and impact on their self confidence.  A Speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature of the child's speech difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan.  ​Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.

Reading & Literacy


Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school.  Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills.  Difficulty with decoding and reading comprehension impacts on a child's ability understand the school curriculum as well as their performance on written tests and assignments.


Our licensed Speech Pathologists provide in home language and literacy assessments to identify areas of need and provide customized treatment programs to help children experiencing difficulties with the following:

B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development



Children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often benefit from speech therapy and behaviour therapy intervention program. Intervention is effective in maximizing communication, social-emotional, academic and functional life skills development.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) provides two Autism Funding Programs for Speech and Behaviour Therapy:

Autism Funding: Under Age 6
Autism Funding: Ages 6-18

Autism Funding programs allow families maximum choice and flexibility. This funding is available in all service delivery areas of the province and is intended to assist parents in purchasing intervention services that best suit their child’s needs.

Applying for Autism Programs

If your child has been diagnosed with ASD, and you wish to enroll in the Autism Funding Program, contact your local Ministry of Children and Family Development office to complete a funding agreement.


​​Autism Funds: Under Age 6 may only be used for:


• Services of behaviour consultants, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists who are listed on the Registry of Autism Service Providers (RASP), at http://www.actcommunity.net/.

• Behaviour interventionists • Administrative costs (up to $100 monthly).

• Applicable employer costs (e.g. employee income tax, Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Workers Compensation Board premiums, 4% vacation pay).


Autism Funds: Ages 6 – 18 may only be used to for:


• Behaviour consultants • Speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists

• Behaviour interventionists • Life skills and social skills programs

• Out-of-school support/tutoring (not part of regular school program)

• Specialized therapeutic activities and camps designed to address your child’s ASD

• Dietary or nutritional counselling from a registered dietician/nutritionist

• Family counselling/therapy

• Other interventions recommended by a professional/specialist* (pre-approval suggested)

• Administrative costs (up to $50 monthly).

• Applicable employer costs (e.g. employee income tax, Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and Workers Compensation Board premiums, 4% vacation pay).



Up to 20% of BOTH Autism Funds: Under Age 6 and Autism Funds: Ages 6-18 may be used for:

• Training within BC

• Travel costs to access autism intervention or training within BC (round trip greater than 80kms)

• Equipment, as necessary for effective intervention, outlined in a Justification for Equipment/Supplies form completed by a professional/specialist* (behaviour consultant, physiotherapist, speech-language pathologist, paediatrician, psychiatrist, registered psychologist, registered psychological associate, neurologist or occupational therapist). Pre-approval suggested.

*Please note that some interventions and equipment recommended by a professional/specialist are not eligible expenses. The following are examples of items that are not eligible: • Home repairs/renovations/swimming pools/ hot tubs/trampolines/playground equipment • Household items, including appliances • General recreation and sports enrolment fees • Sports/fitness equipment, including bicycles • Electronics, including televisions, CD players, stereos, MP3 players, game systems, video games, tracking devices, and cellular phones/palm pilots • Non-ASD specific CDs, DVDs, and videos • Musical instruments • Vitamins/medical supplies/incontinence supplies/orthotics • Clothing/helmets • Food (small reinforcers for Applied Behaviour Analysis therapy may be eligible) • Services provided out of province Not all ineligible expenses are listed.


It is recommended that families contact the Autism Funding Unit at 1 877 777-3530 for preapproval before purchasing items.
