Therapy for Aphasia & Brain Injury

By age 4 a child is expected to be understandable to others 90% of the time.  There are different reasons why some children have trouble with speaking clearly.  Difficulties with speaking clearly and not being understood can leave a child feeling frustrated and impact on their self confidence.  A Speech-language pathologist will start by conducting a speech evaluation to better understand the nature of the child's speech difficulty and develop an individualized treatment plan.  Parent education and training is provided to ensure maximal support at home and to facilitate faster progress.

Reading & Literacy

Children who begin speaking late may continue to lag behind their peers in language and be at greater risk for academic and reading difficulties once they start school.  Challenges with reading are also fairly common among children with average language skills.  Difficulty with decoding and reading comprehension impacts on a child's ability understand the school curriculum as well as their performance on written tests and assignments.

Speech & Articulation Therapy

Nexus Therapy offers in home treatment for children and adults with speech delays and articulation difficulties in Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam, New West Minster, Langley and Richmond, B.C..

Speech, articulation and phonological delays and difficulties are characterized by unclear or imprecise speech resulting from the improper use or placement of the tongue, lips, vocal cords, velum or jaw.  A speech delay can lead to difficulties in being understood by others, resulting in frustration and embarrassment for both the speaker and listener.

Some parents think their child will overcome their speech difficulties in time and wait for too long before seeking the assistance of a registered speech therapist.  It is recommended that parents contact a registered Speech Language Pathologist when they are concerned about their child's speech clarity and vocabulary development to ensure their child is able to communicate as would be expected at their age and to prevent the existing delay from widening over time.

In some cases speech / articulation difficulties and substitution errors are developmental in nature and may improve on their own over the course of time.  By the age of 4, however, it is expected that a child should be understandable to an unfamiliar adult.  A proper speech assessment conducted by an experienced speech therapist will provide parents with valuable information concerning the nature of their child's speech problem, whether treatment is warranted and the type of treatment that is recommended to see best results.

A frequent question asked by parents is: "how long will it take to work"?  The answer to this question is complex and depends on a variety of factors including: the severity of the delay, disorder or impairment, the child's rate and speed of learning, the stimulability of the error sound(s), the intensity and frequency of parent support and home work practice, the child's level of cooperation, attention level and motivation, and possible contributing medical factor's such as an underlying diagnosis, developmental delay or disorder, or chromosomal disorder.

To see optimal results, our therapists try to make therapy fun, engaging, educational and motivating for children.  Home work and parent training is also seen as a vital component of successful therapy.

Contacting a speech therapist is advised when any of the following speech or oro-myofacial difficulties are noted:

  • unclear or unintelligible speech
  • sound substitution errors
  • difficulty with the production of certain speech sounds
  • consonant deletions
  • syllable deletions
  • forward or visible tongue placement during speech
  • open mouth posture in resting position
  • tongue thrust
  • lower jaw instability or lateral jaw sliding during speech
  • drooling
  • difficulties with feeding or chewing

Impairments in the above areas may be related to neurological impairment such as autism, cerebral palsy or Down's Syndrome.  Children with typical neurological development may also experience difficulty in these areas as well.
